Charles was born on December 3, 1949 in St. Charles, IL. He worked at National Steel and was a desk clerk for the U.S. Government, retiring from the Army Records Center in 2009. He was a Vietnam War veteran, proudly serving his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Camden in 1969. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal (first award); Vietnam Service Medal (3stars); Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device (1960); Armed Forces Expeditionary (Korea); Meritorious Unit Commendation. He is survived by and will be missed by his wife of 37 years; Sylvia "Fay" (Cassidy) Fields of Granite City; daughters, Colleen Fields of Granite City, Katie Stienke of Wisconsin; sons; Ernie Brown of Connecticut, Timmy Brown of Granite City; sisters, Linda & (Carl) Sanders of Walnut Hill, IL, Karla Masters of Granite City; half sister, Leone & (Bill) Gee of Fort Lupton, CO; grandchildren, David Pyles, Millennia Becker, Michael Brown, Aaron Brown, Jason Brown, Ledel Brown, Jennifer Stienke, Jessica Stienke, Erica Stienke, Amber Stienke; great-granddaughter, Mercy Pyles; nieces, Rachel & (Clint) Cope of Mitchell, Bridget Daniels of Granite City; nephew, Rick Gibson of Rolla, MO; 4 great-nieces; 4 great-nephews; 3 great-great nieces; 1 great-great nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Arnold Fields in 1968 and his mother Margie (Rapp) Fields in 2003; half brother Jerry Fields in 2007. In celebration of his life a visitation will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City where a funeral service will begin at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. Clint Wisdom officiating. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis with full military rites.
