Fiennes-Clinton family.......
Descendants of the Earls of Lincoln, and distantly related to the Dukes of Newcastle. The name is variously spelt Fynes or Fiennes - both ways of spelling are still in use by various branches of the family.
It seems that Clinton James Fiennes Clinton, son of Rev. Henry Fynes Clinton adopted the spelling Fiennes in the early nineteenth century.
The branch of the Fiennes-Clintons that you are looking were vicars, father and son and in one case nephew in their turn, of the parish of Cromwell,a village near Newark in Nottinghamshire, a living in the patronage of the Dukes of Newcastle. ( St. Giles, Cromwell has a good history on its web site)
Younger sons of the British aristocracy who were unlikely to inherit the Title/money often were encouraged to enter the church despite the fact that often they had no particular religious conviction (though that doesn't seem to have been particularly the case with the F-Cs) With many parish livings being in the patronage of the local aristocratic family, those sons who had gone into the church would be be appointed to the livings as a way of securing their livelihoods.
Rev. Henry Fiennes Clinton, vicar of Cromwell, son of Clinton James F-C, married Sarah Smith. Their children in birth order - Eleanor, Ida, Susan, Adela, Henry, Charles, Clement, Henderson, and Madeline, all of whom survived into adulthood.
Rev Henry Fiennes-Clinton, M.A. (Durham), Rector of Cromwell (Cromwell Rectory, Nottingham), Nottinghamshire, born 5 Feb 1826, married 9 July 1850 to Sarah Katherine Smith who died 23 March 1898. She was the daughter of Rev. John B. Smith, D.D.).
Rev Henry Fiennes-Clinton and Sarah Katherine had 8 children. In birth order, they were - Eleanor, Ida, Susan, Adela, Henry, Charles, Clement, Henderson, and Madeline, all of whom survived into adulthood
