Biography

Jane was born in 1782. She was the daughter of William Fife (1757–1838) and Margaret Boyd (1760–1825).

On 8 Jan 1807, Jane married James Espy at the Big Spring Church, Newville, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. They had the following children:

Captain Thomas Espy 23 November 1807 – 6 July 1862 (Company H, 62nd Pennsylvania Regiment - he died after being wounded and taken prisoner at the battle of Gaines Mills on June 22, 1862)

Margaret Espy Fife 23 January 1809 – 4 March 1884

Colonel William Espy 14 April 1811 – 10 June 1885

Ann Espy Morrow 2 March 1813 – 26 July 1849

James Espy 23 July 1815 – 11 July 1883

Elizabeth Espy Wilson 7 August 1817 – Deceased

Mary Espy McCormick 9 October 1819 – 31 May 1895

Jane Espy 11 April 1823 – Deceased

John Stanley Espy 3 March 1826 – 19 March 1904

In 1850, Jane (age 67) and James (age 69) farmed in Upper St Clair, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, with their grandsons: Thomas Wilson (age 11) and James Espy Wilson (age 9). The boys were sons of daughter Elizabeth and her husband James Wilson. The elder James had died in 1842 and Elizabeth may have died by 1850. The boys' younger brother, William Wilson, had been adopted by their uncle, Thomas Espy, and his wife Elizabeth Hickman. Martha Savians (age 17) was a household servant. The farm was valued at $16,000.

Jane passed away about 1852. [1]
