Biography

"Giles FIFIELD & Mary his wyfe were maried ye (7th) of ye (4th) M 1652" which is Quaker terminology for 7 Jun 1652 Hampton, Rockingham Co, New Hampshire.[1][2][3][4][5][6]

In 1657 he was a mariner [2]of Charlestown, Massachusetts (now within Boston).

He had a daughter Mary who was recorded as born & died in 1659 in Hampton, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire.

In 1660 he called Henry GREEN, his uncle.

He was a tobacco winder.[2]

On 12 Jun 1699/70 Giles was admitted to the first church in Charlestown, Middlesex Co (now Suffolk Co), Massachusetts.[2]

On 31 May 1671 in Charlestown, MA he was made a freeman.

On 2 May 1672 in Woburn, Massachusetts his next marriage was to Judith CARTER,[7] d.c. 1677 (daughter of Mary & Rev. Thomas CARTER, [8] first pastor of the church in Woburn MA) & widow of Samuel CONVERSE.[9][10]

In 1675, he was recorded at age about 46 (b.c. 1629).

On 24 Aug 1676, he was still a resident of Charlestown, Middlesex Co (now Suffolk Co), Massachusetts when he was a soldier in King Philip's War.[11]

Giles Fifield died on "5 (8) 1676" which is Quaker terminology for 5 Oct 1676.[1][2][3][12]

On 25 Oct 1676 his Last Will was proved in Charlestown, MA.[13] which mentioned:

- his children
- his cousin Elizabeth
- gave to wife Judith "all she brought him"
- gave to Samuel CONVERS & Abigail, his sister, as a legacy of my love, 10 shillings each in silver.[10]

Research Notes

The American FIFIELDs are said to be of Scottish descent & the surname they bear is understood to have been originally a union of the name of the county of Fife in Scotland with the name of Field. However, some authorities believe the name is derived from a parish, hamlet, village or township in England.

In the USA most FIFIELDs descend from the immigrant William FIFIELD. Even today the state of New-Hampshire has the largest percentage of FIFIELD families in the USA. However the largest number of FIFIELDs is in the state of New York.

"Giles Fifield is supposed to have been a brother of William the ancestor, but did not appear in New Hampshire until some years after the latter. His wife was Mary Perkins (daughter of Abraham Perkins) and lived in Charlestown, Massachusetts as late as 1657. Their daughter Mary was born in Hampton New Hampshire in 1695 & besides her, they had a son Richard, who was born in Charlestown".[14]

Giles FIFIELD b. abt.1629 appeared for a while in Hampton, Rockingham Co., New Hampshire, but it was about 12 years later than William FIFIELD's arrival there. It may suggest a relationship (some theorize they were brothers) that has NOT yet been proven. Giles was married to Mary PERKINS of Hampton[15][16][17][18] and they resided in Charlestown, MA. The descendants of Giles FIFIELD are relatively few.

1st wife Mary was a twin (to brother Abraham).

Giles FIFIELD was an ancestor of Samuel ADAMS, Jr. b=16 Sep 1722 who was a brewer & Revolutionary War patriot [19] & Governor of MA.

PORTER "takes issue" with SAVAGE, who suggested (NEHGR v2 p390) that "Samuel HAYNES of Portsmouth married, 9 Jan 1673, Mary FIFIELD, probably daughter of Giles of Hampton". In a letter (NEHGR v39 p81) he asserted that it was impossible, citing the Will of her father in 1683 indicating she was unmarried at that time. The letter repeats the problems in MITCHELL's account of the PERKINS family & provides some additional information about the descendants of Luke PERKINS of Wrentham, probably son of Luke PERKINS of Plympton (grandson of Abraham PERKINS in his earlier article above).

Further documentation for much of the newer original research is contained in issues of the "FIFIELD Flyer" available at NEHGS, New-Hampshire Historical Society, the LDS Library in UT,Salt-Lake-City plus a few other miscellaneous repositories.

It is now known that Giles FIFIELD was a brother of Richard FIFIELD of St. Michael's Parish, Barbados. One Robert BOYES, in a letter to his friend, "Richard FIFEILD", written aboard ship on 21 Nov 1653 & carried to Richard by Robert's kinsman, Theobald SHELLEYES, may provide a clue to the place of origin in England of the FIFIELDs. BOYES asked Richard to write home to Robert's mother & to one Peter EVANS & his father, mother & brothers & mentions elsewhere in the letter Grace EVANS, the sister of Peter EVANS living in London, England.

If you look at the changes page for "Mrs Mary Fifield" you will see that she originally had

Father: William Fifield (Fifield-257) and Mother: Mrs. Mary Fifield (Fifield-250)

William Fifield-257 got merged into his brother, Giles Fifield-72

I do not recommend any more merges at this time. Let's wait until after the holidays, in case Michelle is too busy to review.

I do recommend correcting the parents of the involved children, after she has a chance to look at them. I am posting some source images on the profiles of the involved parties.

Michelle, please comment with your approval or concerns before changes are actually made.
