In 1850, Clay was 20 years old and living with Marcellas and Eliza Finch in Koshkonong, Wisconsin. He listed his occupation as laborer and was attending school.[2]
Clay was a farmer and a stock raiser. In 1853, he moved to Fayette County, Iowa, "with 25 cents in his pocket" and by 1878 he "owned 160 acres of land in Fayette County, Iowa, valued at $4,800." Was a Republican.
In 1856, 25-year-old Clay was living in Illyria, Fayette County, Iowa, where it appears that he and his half-brother Duane Finch (13) were assisting George Ward with the farming of George's land.[3]
On April 22, 1857, Clay married Sarah Ann Gibbon from Leeds, England.[4] They would have seven children:

In 1860, Clay (29) and Sarah (24) were living in Illyria, Iowa, with their children William (2) and Judith (7 months). Also living with the family was Melep Inland (14).[5]
In 1870, Clay (39) and Sarah (34) were living in Illyria, Fayette County, Iowa, with their six children.[6]
In 1880, Clay (49) and Sarah (44) were still living on their farm in Fayette County, Iowa, with their six children - William (22), James (18), Hannah (16), Mary (14), Josey (11) and Allie (3).[7]
In 1885, Clay (54) and Sarah (48) lived in Westfield, Fayette County, Iowa, with daughters Hannah (20), Mary (18) and Myrtle (7).[8]
In 1900, Clay (69) and Sarah (64) lived with their daughter Josey (31) in Fayette, Iowa.[9]
In 1910, Clay (79) and Sarah (74) lived on Mechanic Street in Fayette, Iowa.[10]
Columbus Clay Finch died on November 16, 1915, in Fayette, Iowa.[1] He is buried in Lot 106 of Grandview Cemetery in Fayette, Fayette County, Iowa.[1][11]
