Biography

George was born in 1926. He was the son of Lewis Finch and Louie Jones. He passed away in 2014.

George Lewis Finch was born on October 5, 1926 in Indianapolis, Indiana, the first child of Lewis Spann Finch and Louie Mae (Jones) Finch.

In the fall after his 1944 graduation from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, George joined the United States Navy, receiving his basic training in Great Lakes, Illinois and attending quartermaster school in Bainbridge, Maryland. Aboard the USS Sampson and the USS Chikaskia, he served through the end of World War II until July 1946, receiving the Victory Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.

Joining the personnel department of the Diamond Chain Company in March of 1948, George met co-worker Virginia Mae Anderson of Elizabethtown, Indiana. The two were married on August 25th, 1951.

Earning his degree from Butler University while working, George graduated with a B.S. in Business Administration in 1953, and soon thereafter became Diamond Chain's Personnel Manager, a position from which he retired in early 1989.

George pursued many hobbies during his 87 years, including running, cycling, canoeing, sailing and photography. He was a member of the Pike Township Lions Club, and served on the Pike Township School Board for nine years.

George was preceded in death by his wife Virginia in 2007; his step-brother Dick in 1990; his brother Bob in 2002, and his brother John in 2011.

George passed away on 20 March, 2014 in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana followed with burial in March, 2014 at the Crown Hill Cemetery, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.

He is survived by his sons L. Mark Finch and Evan Finch; his daughters-in-law Katherine (Lee) Finch and Grace Blanchard; and his grandson Hans Bruner, all of Indianapolis.
