Biography

Sarah (Finch) Scales was born in Norfolk, England.

Sarah was born about 1848. She was not christened until 1856, along with her sisters Mary Ann (b.1846) and Charlotte (b.1853). ^[1]

Sarah was living with her father George Lincoln and her mother Charlotte (Blythe) Finch in 1861. ^[2]

Sarah first married Elijah Snelling in 1868. ^[3] They had one child, Rosa May. ^[4]

Elijah passed away in 1870. ^[5] Sarah then remarried John Scales in 1871. ^[6] They had two children: George and Laura. ^[7]

Sarah passed away at the age of 33 in 1881. Her death was registered in Depwade, Norfolk, England. ^[8]

Research Notes

Sarah and her sisters were born out of wedlock. Their births were all registered with the surname of "Finch" in Depwade, and no mother's maiden name was given. Their mother, Charlotte, was previously married to Thomas Finch. ^[9] They had several children. Thomas passed away before 1841, when Charlotte was living with two of her children, William and Elizabeth, and her mother, Sarah. ^[10] In 1851, Charlotte was living with George Lincoln as his "housekeeper", along with two children, Christmas and Elizabeth, as well as two "natural" daughters, Sarah and Mary Ann. ^[11] Charlotte and George Lincoln were not married until 1855. ^[12]
