Mattie died on October 28, 1900, in Palmer, Ellis, Texas, United States, aged 48. She was buried in Palmer Cemetery, Palmer, Ellis County, Texas.[6]
All people on the 1870 census listed after Martha are, also, listed as being Black. I believe that those particular Farm Laborers, children of previous slaves and as young as they were, most likely not having a last name, went ahead and were listed with the last name of Fincher.
Martha's father, Joseph Travis Fincher was shown on the 1860 Slave Schedule to have owned 1 Black slave, male, age 31 (no name given).[7] On that same schedule, looking at the various neighbors, some families owned 1 slave, some owned many.
