  17. Source: #S83 Page: Died after census of 1880 Quality or Certainty of Data: 3 Date: Aft 1879 Note: Jason L. Finnicum was counted in the 1880 U.S. Census in Fawn Creek Twp., Montgomery Co., Kansas according to information supplied by Mrs. Charlotte Eberhard of Athens, GA 30606. Mary Catherine had died; Walter S. Finnicum was 14, Frederick J. Finnicum was 12, and Mark Paul Finnicum was 9. I have found no further records of Jason L. Finnicum. Data: Text: Life and Family of Jason L. Finnicum Jason Finnicum was born 8 Mar 1841 in Richland County, Ohio. Hisparents were Phebe Scott and Mark Finicum. This entry from the 1850 U.S. census contains an early mention of JasonFinicum. The entry is from Washington Twp, Richland County, Ohio (p. 221). Mark Finicum is 49 in age, male, born in Pa. Phebe is 45 in age, female, born in Va. Lucinda is 17 in age, female, born in Ohio. Mary is 14, female, born in Ohio. Jason is 9, male, born in Ohio. Francis A. is 4, sex is unclear, born in Ohio. Martha is 3, female, born in Ohio. Elizabeth Barnes is 30, female, born in Ohio, married within the censusyear. Jaywellan is 3/12 year old, male, born in Ohio.An unpublished genealogy, "The SHRIVERS" of Clearcreek Township, AshlandCounty, Ohio "Expanded and Updated from the original by Albert T. Shriver from1977-1979", gives the birthdates of the children of Mark Finicum and "Phoebe"Scott as:Elizabeth Finicum 2 Nov 1829John Finicum 8 Mar 1831Lucinda Finicum 12 May 1833Mary P Finicum 28 Sep 1836Jason L Finicum 8 Mar 1841Francis A Finicum 14 Aug 1845Marsha I Finicum 9 Mar 1847.Mark Finicum and his family appear to have moved to Richland County in NorthCentral Ohio by 1840. Mark Finicum bought land there from David Snider andhis wife Catherine Snider on the sixth day of March 1837. This entry from the 1840 U.S. Census from Washington Township, RichlandCounty, Ohio (p.261) lists Mark FINACUM as the householder. There was onemale age 15-20, one male age 40-50 (Mark), one female under age 5 (Mary),one female age 5-10 (Lucy), one female age 10-15 (Elizabeth) and one femaleage 30-40 (Phebe). Since the family lived in Washington Twp. in 1840 and1850, Jason was probably born there. Three entries before the household of Mark Finicum the 1840 Census listsEbenezer Scott; this may have been the brother of Jason’s mother, Phebe ScottFinicum. The next entry after Mark Finicum's is one for the household of WilliamScott; this household consisted of a male age 70-80 and a female age 60-70. This William may have been the father of Jason’s mother. The next entry afterWilliam's is one for the household of Silas Scott; he may also have been thebrother of Phebe Scott Finicum. An officer of a county genealogy society in Ohio sent me a wonderfulletter full of information about the Finicum/Finnicum family. Thisinformation came to me from Mrs. Sara Finnicum of Carrollton, OH 44615. She said about the source, "There was supposed to have been a Finnicum family Bible printed in1814 & last known owner - a Wm. Finnicum of New Rumley, Harr. Co., Oh.- No one knows where it is today.I've never seen it! but some of the info printed about it regarding thefamily has checked out such as the tombstones in Simmons Ridge Cem. &on my husband's line.""According to the 'supposed' Bible info Wm. & Frances/Fanney had 12children. It says - She was 20 & he 28 at time of their marriage but givesno date or place of such event. The children listed are as follows:1) Ann b. 26 May 1789 d. 12 Sept. 1816married - ?2) Joshua b. 11 Dec. 1791 d. in infancy3) William b. 11 Dec. 1793 d. in infancy(The 1st Son Wm.)4) Thomas b. 20 Apr. 1796 d. 20 Apr. 1879md. Margaret Leas (she d. 4 Sept. 1876)" Sara also sent this additional information: "In 1829, Wm. died & is buried with his wife in Simmon's Ridge CemeteryLoudon Twp. Carroll Co. Ohio. (This would've been Harrison Co. in 1829yet)His stone is very readable for having been put there in 1829 - I've seenit. It reads -FINNICUM In memory of William d. 8 July 1829 ae 66 yrs 4ms 14 ds.next to his stone:FINICUM Frances Wife of Wm. Finicum d. 28 Oct. 1848 ae 75yrs. This stone is very weathered & was chalked to read. Our 'genie' chapter copied & included this cemetary in our Vol II Lee & LoudonTwp. Cemetery book."By 1820 William’s family had moved to Ohio from Pennsylvania. WilliamFINICUM is listed in the U.S. Census of 1820 in Rock Twp., Harrison Co, Ohio, page 127. His household contains one free white male under 10, one male 10under 16, one male 16 under 26, one male 45 & upwards, one free white femaleunder 10, one female 10 under 16, one female 16 under 26 and one female 45 &upwards; one was engaged in agriculture and none in commerce ormanufacturing.Mark married Phebe Scott 18 Nov. 1828, in Jefferson Co., Ohio, in the OhioRiver Valley. The family of Mark FINNECUM was enumerated in Springfield Twp., JeffersonCo., Ohio (p. 64) in the U.S. Census of 1830. There was one male age 30-40,one female under 5, and one female 20-30 years old. The little girl may beElizabeth Finicum who shows up with conflicting ages in later records. Mark'sother children appear to have been born after this census was taken.Researchers at the Richland County Genealogical Society near Mansfield, Ohiofound several family names in the RICHLAND COUNTY CEMETERY RECORDSp. 392, in the Little Washington Cemetery. Next to each other are:SCOTT John s/o Silas & Phebe d. 28 Jan 1840, 0-0-18FINICUM John s/o Mark & Phebe d. 9 Feb 1840, 9-1-7SCOTT Ebeneezer d. 5 Oct 1841, 31-8-13The researcher noted that this is the only Finicum in the index. Elsewhere on p.392 in the Little Washington Cemetery are:SCOTT William d 6 Sep 1854SCOTT phebe w/o Silas d 16 Mar 1845, 29-4-5John Finicum is most probably the son of Mark's listed in the 1840 census. TheWilliam Scott who died is probably Phebe's father and not her brother. This entry from the 1850 U.S. census lists Mark's family including Jason. Theentry is from Washington Twp, Richland County, Ohio (p. Jaywellan is 3/12 year old, male, born in Ohio. The Elizabeth Barnes in the 1850 census entry is probably Mark's oldestdaughter. Her marriage to E. J. Barnes is recorded in Richland County, OhioMarriages 1813 - 1871 compiled by Mohican Area Genealogists Interested inComputers. According to that report, "Elizabeth FINICUM married EbenezerBARNES 11 Aug. 1849".Elizabeth appears to have died in 1856. There is an entry that appears to behers in the Cemetery Inventory for Wapello Co. Iowa collected by the WPA inthe early 1930's. Elizabeth Barnes is reported as died 1856 at age 25 andburied in the Westview Cemetery. The age recorded for Elizabeth in the 1850census would indicate that she was born about 1820. The age of this ElizabethBarnes indicates that she was born about 1830. The age of Ebenezer "E. J."Barnes leads me to suspect that the Elizabeth Finicum who he married was bornafter 1828 since an earlier birth makes her older than he was.Jason’s mother, Phebe Scott Finicum, died sometime after 1852. Researchersat the Richland County Genealogical Society near Mansfield, Ohio havenarrowed down the period within which Phebe's death may have occurred. Shewas alive 21 March 1853 when she signed a deed with her husband, MarkFinicum, selling two town lots in Washington [Village], Washington Twp.,Richland County, Ohio. This is the last transaction from or to Mark Finnicum inthe Richland County, Ohio Recorder's Office INDEX OF DEEDS, vol. 1,1814-1855 (or in vol. 2, 1855 to 1876).Phebe appears to have died in Iowa in 1854. The W.P.A. Cemetery Inventoryfor Wapello Co. Iowa has listings for the Westview Cemetery, Kirkville, WapelloCounty, Iowa. Phebe (Mrs. M. S.) Finegan is listed as died 19 May 1854 at age49. The Kirkville area borders the Mahaska County where Mark's family wasenumerated 1856.Information sent to the Jefferson County Genealogical Society in 1986 by SamButler may explain the death of Phebe in 1854. The page in the FITZSIMMONSFamily History File from The Genealogy of James Lyon Fitzsimmons indicatesthat Elizabeth Failor, wife of Patrick Fitzsimmons, "died 2 October 1854 inMahaska County, Iowa. She died in the cholera epidemic of 1854 which hit partof Iowa." This information also indicates that Elmirah Fitzsimmons marriedRobert Ross. "He died in the cholera epidemic on 1854, 12 June." Mary JaneFitzsimmons "married John Paul, he died in the cholera epidemic." JosephFitzsimmons "married first to Mary  ? she died in the cholera epid.". (ThisJoseph Fitzsimmons later married Mark's daughter, Mary Paul Finicum, inKansas.)By 1856 Phebe was dead and 21 year old Lucy was the oldest female in ahousehold that included 6 year old Jay Wellan Barnes. They were enumeratedin an 1856 Mahaska Co. Iowa Census for Harrison Twp.; on page 816 is MarkFINICUM's family.M S Finicum is 55 in age, male, widowed, born in Pennsylvania,Farmer, Native voter, not indicated as Owner of Land. Lucinda Finicum is 21 in age, female, born in Ohio. Mary Finicum is 19 in age, female, born in Ohio. Jason Finicum is 15 in age, male, born in Ohio. Francis A. Finicum is 10 in age, male, born in Ohio. Irene Finicum is 8 in age, female, born in Ohio. J W Barnes is 6 in age, male, born in Ohio.Mark and his family moved from Iowa to Kansas before 1860. A History ofKansas published in 1883 mentions Mary Finnicum in its coverage of OskaloosaTownship. "In the spring of 1857 the first school, one paid for by subscription, was taught by Miss Mary Finnicome, in a frame building of native lumber. Thehouse was simply a rough board enclosure, and was situated in the eastern partof town. In now forms a part of T. H. Noble's store. Miss Finnicome afterwardbecame the wife of Joseph Fitsimons."Mary's marriage was recorded in this entry from "Marriage Licenses of RecordJefferson Co. KS 1855-1930 by the Jefferson Co. Gen. Soc.".FINNICUM, Mary P. 27 OSKALOOSA, KANSAS Feb 07 1864FITSIMMONS, Joseph 40The First Hundred Years of Jefferson County Kansas contains a picture of "THEFRONTIER HOUSE, Two blocks north of the court house, Oskaloosa". It notes,"Its stone portion was built about 1858, owned by Mark S. Finnicum. In 1864 itpassed to Wm. A. Coy, register of deeds and later all round merchant. In 1867opened as a hotel by S. S. Cole."... Rose E. Balao of the Jefferson CountyGenealogical Society sent me The First Hundred Years of Jefferson CountyKansas and pages and pages of other great information.Following is the census entry for Mark's family from the 1860 U.
