Advice has been received of the accidental death in the Pacific war zone of Lieutenant Thomas Sharman Finlayson, husband of Mrs. E. S. Finlayson, of 4 Saltburn Road, Milford.
Lieutenant Finlayson, who was 31, was educated at Bayfield school, Tauranga School and Mount Albert Grammar School. He was a qualified surveyor. He entered the office of Messrs. Harrison and Grierson as a cadet, subsequently joining the Public Works Department, and was on the surveying and engineering staff of the Waitemata County Council when he entered camp in January, 1942.
At the time of his death he was serving with the Third Division. N.Z.E.F., having left New Zealand toward the end of 1942.
Lieutenant Finlayson was a noted athlete, having won the 440 yds. secondary school championship and the 140 yds. and 880 yds. Auckland University championships, as well as performing with distinction at the Auckland provincial and New Zealand Universities championships, and playing football for Grammar Old Boys, Auckland University and North Shore Clubs. He was a keen yachtsman. :Lieutenant Finlayson, who was a son of Mr., and Mrs. T. SI. Finlayson, of Cheltenham, leaves a daughter.
A younger brother, SecondLieutenant F. A. Finlayson, is serving in the Middle East.
