He was the son of John Finlayson and Susanna Turpin.

He married Amelia Clerk, daughter of Walter Clerk, a Captain in the Army, the widow of Godfrey Piercy, on 22 May 1860 at St Peter's, Dublin, Ireland. [2]

He passed away in 1883.

DEATH OF THE REV. HENRY FINLAYSON.
The public will hear with regret of the death of the Rev. Henry Finlayson,A.M., Dean's Vicar and Minor Canon, Christ’s Church Cathedral, Dublin, with which Cathedral he had been connected for upwards of 38 years. His zeal and the faithful discharge of his parochial duties for so many years won for him the love and esteem of all classes, and his conscientious and manly advocacy of the true Christian principle gained for him the admiration of all to whom he was known.

He is buried in the Mount Jerome Cemetery and Crematorium Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland. [3]
