Biography

Daughters of the American Revolution
David Finley is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A040767.

David Finley was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.

1748 Birth and Parents

David Finley was born either 10 January 1748 in Augusta County, Virginia and baptized 20 January 1748 at Tinkling Springs Presbyterian Church. [1] or 1 Jun 1754, per direct descendant Carmen Finley, quoting Orange Co IN Cemetery Records p224 for the Orleans Finley Cemetery (per Finleys of Early Sonoma County, p56).

France shows him baptized January 21, 1748 [2]

Stout shows him to be the son of John Finley (1724-1791) who married Mary Thankful Caldwell (17289-1787) on 4/21/1741. [3]

Albert Finley France quotes the following from the fly leaf of an old Bible belonging to Jane (Finley) Smith: Your grandfather was David Finley, born Jan 10, 1748 who married Elizabeth Mounts. His father was John Finley and he married Mary Caldwell, daughter of Thomas Caldwell and a cousin to Martha Caldwell who was the Mother of the famous Statesman, John C. Calhoun. [4]

1768 Marriage

In 1768 he married Elizabeth Mounts. [1][2]

1776 Revolution

He was a Lt. in Capt. Kirk's Company in the Revolution.[1]

1781 Kentucky

In 1781 he was granted 1000 acres on the Dix River, Lincoln County, Kentucky. [1]

1843 Death

He died in 1843 in Orange County, Indiana. [1][2]

Research Notes

(This David Finley, probable middle name Caldwell, son of Mary/Thankful Caldwell and married to Elizabeth Mounts (spelled Mounce in some genealogies), should not be confused with the related David Finley (middle name reported by descendants to be Doak) born 1760-65 who married Elizabeth Wilson).

Starting 2021Apr09, because of contradictory claims in various speculations, and namesake issues causing confusion, this data is being sorted through and relationships re-evaluated per available (including preserved family Bible) records rather than sundry internet family tree claims alone.

Accounts of this David Finley's immediate relationships differed among published Finley family genealogists such as Admiral Herald Stout (husband of Louise Finley) and Dr Carmen Finley, possibly due to namesake interchanges, requiring review of all possible genuine historical documentation.

* Family Bible of Elizabeth Mounts Finley, with added notes by her daughter Jane Ann Finley Smith, and certified by family genealogist Albert Finley France and quoted in Dr Carmen Finley's history of Sonoma California Finleys (pp 38-39) indicates: JOHN FINLEY and MARY CALDWELL Finley had a son DAVID FINLEY, who married ELIZABETH MOUNTS and had a daughter JANE ANN FINLEY.

Middle names were extremely rare in the colonial period. Do we have any proff that David has a middle name "Caldwell"?
