Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Elizabeth Finney was born in about 1815 in Windle, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Thomas Finney and Ann (Forber) Finney. She was christened on 22 Jan 1815 at St Helens Chapel of Ease. Her father's occupation was given as clogger, and the family's address as Hardshaw.

Elizabeth's first marriage was to someone surnamed Price. She may have married William Price on 18 Jul 1836 in Eccles, Lancashire. Both were resident in Eccles, Elizabeth was able to sign her own name, and the witnesses were Thomas Gorse (probably a church official as he appears multiple times as a witness on the page) and William Morgan.

Their first known child, Ellen Price, was born in about 1841 in the West Indies.

Their son William Price was born in about 1846 in America.

Elizabeth's first husband may have been a soldier, since this kind of globe-trotting was quite unusual back then.

Their son James Price was born in about 1848 in Parr, St Helens, Lancashire. His birth was registered in the second quarter of 1848 in Prescot district (with mother's maiden name Finney).

Elizabeth's daughter Winifred Price was born in about 1851. Winifred's birth was registered in the first quarter of 1851, in Prescot district. According to Winifred's marriage record, her father was James O'Neil, so probably Elizabeth's first husband had died by 1850.

By March 30th 1851, Elizabeth was widowed and living in St Helens. She was employed as a charwoman. On census night, three of her children were in her household - Ellen, James and Winifred - while 5-year-old Thomas was with his maternal grandmother Ann (Forber) Finney.[1]

Elizabeth married James O'Neale in 1855, in a registrar-attended ceremony in Prescot district.

Their daughter Mary A was born in about 1856 in St Helens.

Their son Thomas was born in about 1859 in St Helens.

By April 7th 1861, they were living at 6 York Street, Parr. James was working as a labourer, Ellen as a glass smoother, and William and James as coal miners. A one-year-old granddaughter Elizabeth Price was also in their household.

By April 2nd 1871, James and Elizabeth were living in Parr with their children Winifred and Thomas. James was a labourer, Winifred was a glass smoother.

By April 3rd 1881, Elizabeth was a widow again. She was living in Merton Bank Lane, Parr, and keeping house for her son Thomas, who was a colliery day wage man.
