John Finney was christened on 13 Dec 1789 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of James and Hannah Finney. His father's occupation was recorded as cordwainer, and the family's address as Prescot.

John married Alice Appleton on 3 Jun 1811 at Rainford Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot. Both were of the local parish, and neither had been married before. John was a watch tool maker. The witnesses were Mary Gidman? and Thomas Howard.

Alice died in 1829, aged 33. She was buried on 22 Aug 1829 at Prescot St Mary's. Her address was recorded as Eccleston.

John married Elizabeth sometime between 1829 and 1835. No record of the marriage has yet been located, but her surname is may have been Jones because a 12-year-old stepdaughter named Elizabeth Jones was living with John in 1851.

John and Elizabeth's son Richard was christened on 27 Sep 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His father's occupation was recorded as watch tool maker, and the family's address as Eccleston.

By June 6th 1841, John and Elizabeth were living in Yew Tree Place, Eccleston. John was a tool maker. With them were John's sons John and William from his first marriage, who were both apprentice tool makers; and also their son Richard, who was only five. It's not clear where Elizabeth Jones was at this time, although two households away from them a Mary Jones (aged 25-29) was living with a 3-year-old Elizabeth Jones, so possibly that was her. Whether little Elizabeth was actually Mary's daughter or Elizabeth's daughter is a bit of a mystery, but either is entirely possible. Mary's occupation was shop fl.

By March 30th 1851, John and Elizabeth were still in Eccleston. John was a master watch tool maker. With them was their son Richard, who was now a apprentice tool maker, and 12-year-old Elizabeth Jones, John's stepdaughter, who was still in school. 21-year-old James Finney was lodging with them; he was an apprentice tool maker.

By April 7th 1861, the family were living in St Helens Road in Eccleston. John and Richard were both toolmakers. John's daughter Hannah was back with them; she was still single at 46.

John died in 1863, aged 75. He was buried on 16 Oct 1863 at Prescot St Mary's. His address was recorded as Eccleston.
