Burt was born in Iowa and moved to Cody, Wyoming at age 15 where he spent 3 years as a fire watch in the Shoshone National Forest. At age 17 he enlisted in the Navy after Pearl Harbor and served on a submarine as a Seaman 1st class in the Pacific. He was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for Heroism by Admiral Nimitz.
Burt married his beloved wife, Patricia Marie McClure in 1947.
While helping raise his family in Portland, Oregon, he founded a successful business: State Building Maintenance. In 1965 he moved his business to Eugene and renamed his business Empire Building Maintenance. He was a dedicated, hard worker. Civic minded, he served as President of Kiwanis as well as joining the Lions, Moose and Elks club. Burt was a Scout Leader for many years and always available to family and friends as a general handyman.
Burt loved the Oregon outdoors saying that for him, no one ever leaves Oregon for it has everything; mountains, river, ocean, desert, sand dunes, painted hills, canyons, birds and animals of all kinds. He took his family camping and fishing every chance he got traveling to every corner of the state of Oregon, some parts of Washington, California, Baja and British Columbia.
He was able to identify almost any mushroom and was always first to spot any creature in the wild. He wan an avid bird watcher and fisherman – always the first to get his line in the water.
Burt was steadfast in his love for his family. We, the family, wish to express our love and gratitude to our Dad for all his goodness throughout our lives.
