Biography

Thurston was born in 1792, the son of James Fish and Peggy Briggs. In 1817, when he was 25 years old, he married Ann Jepson at St Marys Church in Blackburn, Lancashire, England. The marriage record indicates that he was a weaver by trade and that neither he nor Ann had been previously married. Witnesses to the marriage were Samuel Jepson and William Maudsley.

Research Notes

In 'Darwen and its people' by J.G. Shaw (1889) p.126: " The foremost figure of the group [of Fish's] is 'Little Tot' otherwise called 'Blackburn Times'. ... His father was James Fish, of Darwen, who married a daughter of Thurston Briggs, of Blacksnape, one of the original four brothers who stand at the head of the Briggs family. She died and left her husband with two children - Mary, who married John Duxbury of Hoddlesden, and 'Little Tot'. James married again and had another son called Ben, who would have been my age if he had lived until today. 'Little Tot' married Ann, daughter of George Jepson, and had a very large family. Altogether I should think he had more than a dozen children, but I can only reckon up four who are living now - Thomas, John, Benjamin and Margaret. Tom and Maggie are twins. They were born in September 1823. The latter is the second wife of Richard Kershaw, of Hob Lane, Edgeworth. Kershaw's first wife was Mary, another of Little Tot's daughters, who was formerly one of my singers."
