Biography

Flag of Yorkshire (adopted 2008)
Elizabeth (Fisher) Tattersall was born in Yorkshire, England.

Elizabeth was born in about 1810, according to the ages given at the 1841 and 1851 censuses, and at her death.

She was probably born in the parish of Elland, just to the south of the town of Halifax. Yorkshire, as the marriage register entry for her marriage to Francis Tattersall says she is "of Elland" although the 1851 census just says Halifax, Yorkshire.

The names of her parents are not known.

She married Francis Tattersall on 21 December 1834 at the Church of St John the Baptist, Halifax, Yorkshire. Francis was described as a Bookkeeper. He signed the register, but Elizabeth made her mark. [1]

Their first child John was born 3 August the following year and was baptised at the parish church of Halifax on 13 September 1835: [2]

A son Abraham was born in 1837, and baptised in the Chapelry of Elland, County of York on 26 February 1837. By this time Francis had found a new profession as a school-master and the family had moved back to Elland: [3]

Their first daughter Elizabeth was born 20 February 1839 in Lindley-cum-Quarmby, a parish on the north-eastern side of the industrial town of Huddersfield. Francis was now a schoolmaster here, and he and Elizabeth were part of the congregation of the Huddersfield Wesleyan Methodist church where baby Elizabeth was baptised on 20 May 1839. [4] [5]

The family were still living in Lindley-cum-Quarmby at the 1841 census and two days before the census was taken on 6 June, a new and unnamed baby had been born. The family were now also able to afford to employ a maid servant, who was probably a nurse to help Elizabeth through her confinement and to look after the other three children. [6]

The baby born on the 4 June 1841 was William [7] who died before his first birthday. [8]

When William died, he was taken back to the parish church of Elland to be buried in the graveyard there on 2 March 1842 .[10]

A daughter named Hannah (but known as Anna) was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire in 1843. [11]

From the information about his employment at the inquest into his death (1855), in about 1845 Francis started to work as a surveyor in the employment of a Mr. Jackson (a contractor), working between Grantham and London.

Elizabeth and Francis' last child Francis was born in the St Pancras district of London in 1846, [12] and died less than a year later in the second Quarter of 1847 in the same district. [13]
There is the burial of a Frances Tattersall on 14 June 1847 at the parish of St Pancras (late of Clarmont Place) aged 8 months and 2 weeks, with no corresponding GRO entry for a female Frances, so this may well be Francis misspelled in the register. [14]

In 1851 the Tattersall family were living in Lincolnshire in the village of Little Gonerby in the Borough of Grantham in the south of the county. The area seemed to have other prosperous middle class families living near. [15]

John Tattershall 14, son, scholar, born Yorkshire Halifax
Elizabeth Tattershall 12, daughter, born Yorkshire Huddersfield
Anna Tattershall 7, daughter, scholar [crossed through], born Yorkshire Wakefield

Later that year they took 8 year old Hannah / Anna back to Elland for her long overdue baptism: [16]

Elizabeth died in November 1854. Her death was reported in the Stamford Mercury of 10 November (a Friday, hence Saturday last was the 4th):

At Thames Bank, Pimlico, on Saturday last, after nine days illness, Elizabeth wife of Francis Tattersall, lately of Grantham [17]

Elizabeth was buried at Brompton Cemetery on 9 November 1854. She was buried in a common grave which meant there would be no headstone erected. The entry in the burial register reads: [18]
