Biography

James Fisher Jr. and wife, Darcus Bowling. Jim Fisher was a Long Hunter who was born 1795 in Greenville Co, SC. He married Darcus in 1815/16 by Rev. John Ridings in Spartanburg Co. He had served in the War of 1812 and Darcus drew a pension for this service which is where we get the marriage details. They spent the next 7 yrs in Spartanburg Co and then moved to Greenville Co in about 1822/23. After 1840, Jim Fisher, his family, and others from the area removed to the present day Transylvania Co, NC around Lake Toxaway, which were the Long Hunters hunting grounds. In 1847, the famed southern novelist, William Gilmore Simms, went on a hunt with the Long Hunters (Nathan Lankford, Columbus Mills, and others went along on this hunt as well) and later wrote stories about the hunt from his diary (now in the Caroliniana Library in Columbia SC.
