Biography

Asa was born about 1819 in New York, details unknown. HIs middle name has been found as both Gordon and Jordan. The latter seems more likely because some records show "A.J. Fisk".

He married Jane Sherwood in 1840 and they lived near Akron, Ohio. They both were named in the death record of daughter Mary Jane Fisk in 1914 at Akron.

The 1850 U.S. census at Wooster, Ohio, showed "Asa J. Fisk" with his wife, Jane. [1] 1860 U.S. census at Canaan Center, Wayne County, Ohio, showed the same.[2] The 1870 census at Liverpool Township, Medina County, Ohio, showed "A.J. Fisk", born 1818 in New York, with a wife "Saphronia" and children Austin and "Wilber". Is "A.J." the same person as Asa Jordan? Again unclear. Was "Saphronia" the same person as "Jane"? Probably not but records tell us very little. Did he remarry? Records tell us very little that is reliable.

The death record of Wilbur Fisk, 1941 at Akron, Ohio, showed his father was "Acey Fisk" and his mother was "Myrtle Clasey" (maiden name Myrtle Fisk, widow of Charles Golden, remarried to Melville Clasey). Should we presume that "Acey" = Asa? Exact relationships are unclear in this muddle of names! Ohio records are poor in this period of time.

"John Sherarts and his wife, Elizabeth, came in 1809 and settled one-half mile west of the river on shore; sold out and removed in 1818. Their children were - Mary, who married Herrick Parker, Esq.; Betsey, who married John T. Ashenhurst; Katherine, who married Christopher Shafer; David, who married Betsey Compton; Caroline who married Charles Crandall; John, who married Abagail Gordon; Jane, who married Asa Fisk, and Angeline, who married David Hammond." [3]

Asa Jordan Fisk passed away in 1882 at Akron, Ohio. The record showed that he was 63, married, a machinist, born in New York. His wife's name wasn't mentioned.

Fisk-1258 and Fisk-206 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be a clear duplicate w/ DOB should be 1819. Marriage cert is found for Jane Sharrits (sp) there was apparently an error made on daughter Mary's death cert with a mis-spelling of Jane's name as Sherwood. Added sources... please merge.

The two profiles appear to be the same person but lots of conflicting information too. Fisk-206 married Jane Sherwood, on 25 Oct 1840 in Erie County, Ohio. But Fisk-1258 apparently married "Jane Sherats". Was "Sherats" a misspelling of Sherwood? Someone more knowledgeable about them will have to decide.

I see the marriage at "Ohio, County Marriages, 1789-2016", database with images, FamilySearch (https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X8P2-NV3 : 29 September 2021), Asa Fisk and Jane Sherats, 1840. What other conflicting info are you seeing? If this is the only inconsistency, wouldn't it be best to merge the 2 Jane profiles into a LNAB unknown since we are only seeing one Jane with the same DOB and POB on the census records I sourced? Duplicates need to be merged, i.e. when two or more profiles represent the same person they must be combined into one profile. This is fundamental to our collaborative, single family tree and point I of our Honor Code. See: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Merging

It isn't clear that they are duplicates. Is "Asa Fisk" even the same person as "Asa Jordan Fisk"? That's an open question. www.familysearch.org shows various other people named "Asa Fisk" and yet others written "Asa Fiske". A few records show the middle name Jordan, some show a meaningless initial J, yet others show no middle name or initial at all. I would not merge anyone without clear evidence.
