Joan was the daughter of Henry FitzHugh and Elizabeth Grey. Her birth date is uncertain.^[1][2]

Douglas Richardson gives conflicting information about her possible marriage. In his Fitz Hugh entries he says she married Robert Willoughby, 6th Lord Willoughby of Eresby.^[1][2] In his Willoughby entries he states that Robert Willoughby married Elizabeth Montagu and Maud Stanhope,^[3][4] and this accords with the entry for Robert Willoughby in Cokayne's Compete Peerage.^[5]
