Biography

Dan Fitzgerald, Sr. Called to Final Reward

Dan Fitzgerald, Sr., one of the pioneer settlers of Pocahontas County, Iowa, was called to his final reward Wednesday, July 1st, at 1:20 P.M. Mr. Fitzgerald had been in poor health since last spring, but death came after a severe illness of three weeks duration. He was an uncomplaining sufferer, however, believing in "not mine but thine will be done", and the end came peacefully.

Dan Fitzgerald was born in Queen's County, Ireland, August 25, 1845, and came to America with his parents when seven years old, settling in New Haven, Conn., where they remained for five years. In 1857 the family moved to Allamakee County, Iowa, where Mr. Fitzgerald grew to manhood and was married to Margaret Coleman in 1867. In the year 1873 he and his young wife moved to Pocahontas County, Iowa, and purchased the farm where they resided until 1916 when they retired to Varina to enjoy a well earned rest and to be near the church he loved so well.

To their happy union ten children were born, two, Mattie and Alice, preceding him in death. The survivors are, his good wife, four daughters, and four sons, Mrs. Mary Regan and Mrs. H. C. Dorton of Fonda, Mrs. H. C. Fex, Joe and Dan Jr.,, of Pocahontas, and Eunice, John and Louis of Varina.

Mr. Fitzgerald was one of the first to "blaze the way" into the new country and met with many trials and hardships in helping develop the virgin prairie to its present state of cultivation. Great honor is due these old pioneer settlers for the conveniences and comforts enjoyed by the later generations.

He was a devout Catholic and a faithful member of St. Columbkille's, advererse conditions, his faith never for a moment waivered.

His noble Christian character and kindly disposition made a lasting impression on all who knew him and "Uncle Dan", as he was familiarly called, was a true friend to all.

The funeral services were held Friday morning at 9:00 o'clock from the family residence at Varina, to St. Columbille's Catholic Church. Rev. Father Maynard offered Requiem High Mass for the repose of his soul, and Rev. Father Butler of Carroll, Iowa, and Rev. Father Heelan of Fonda, assisted at the cemetery.
