James was born in Kentucky in January of 1819. He was the son of Zachariah Fitzgerald and Fanny Sims. Around 1826-1828 he moved to Ohio with his parents and older brother, Allan. They eventually settled in Montgomery County. James is found living with his parents in Miamisburg, OH. In 1863, James married the widow Barbara (Clevenger) Gebhart. Barbara had six children from her first marriage. In 1870, only two were living with James and Barbara. In 1865, James enlisted in the military at the age of 43 and served briefly until the end of the war. (see note) After his wife Barbara died in 1895, James lived with his stepdaughter, Elizabeth.
Research Notes
There is a Pvt. James Edward Fitzgerald, who died 29 Dec 1904 in Dayton, Ohio that is buried in the Dayton National Cemetery. This is not the James Fitzgerald that is the subject of this profile.
Military Service - James enlisted in the Union Army on 27 July 1865. Although General Lee had surrendered the Army of Virginia to General Grant on 9 April 1865, the Civil War did not end. It was not until 2 April 1866 that President Andrew Johnston issued a proclamation declaring that the insurrection was over in all states except Texas. It was not until 20 Aug 1866 that a new state government was formed in Texas and the Civil War officially came to an end. [1]
