Biography

John was born about 1510. (source needed)

He allegedly married Amy Negus from Shelton, Bedfordshire circa 1566. (source needed) If the birthdates are accurate he would have been 56 and she 18. Shelton parish register only starts in 1602.

The following Fitzhugh children were baptised in Gt Barford, Bedfordshire. Neither parent's name is given:

- William 21 Jun 1570 -Robert 23 Jul 1573 -John 6 Jan 1576 -Ann 15 Feb 1580

Some think they also had Elizabeth in 1566 and Henry in 1569, without a source.

He was buried at Gt Barford, Bedfordshire on 24 Sep 1579.^[1]

Research Notes

John was probably connected to the Fitzhughs of Wilden who appear in the Visitation of Bedfordshire . He is possibly the son of Nicholas and Grace.^[2]

- there is no marriage record for John Fitzhugh and Amy Negus

- neither parent is named in the baptisms of the Gt Barford Fitzhugh children

- the only mention of a John Fitzhugh by name in Gt Barford is his burial. How do we know that John was the father of the four children, although it's a reasonable assumption.

- John's unsourced birth of 1510 looks dubious

- there's no mention of the Fitzhugh name in either Gt Barford or Wilden in VCH Bedfordshire

- there is no record that John Fitzhugh's wife was named Amy, let alone Amy Negus. Loads of online trees show her as such without any evidence at all. The sheep syndrome. Much like John's birth of 1510.
