Biography

James Francis FitzJames-Stuart (2nd Duque de Liria y Xerica) was born on 21 October 1696 at St. Germain en Laye, France. He was the son of James Fitzjames (1st Duke of Berwick-Upon-Tweed) and his wife the Lady Honora Burke. [1]

He was invested as a (K.G.F.) in 1714. In 1715 he accompanied the titular King James III to Scotland. He was sent on a special embassy from Spain to Russia in December 1726. He was invested as a Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) on 3 April 1727 from the titular King James III. He was Field Marshal of the allied French and Spanish armies in Naples in 1733. He held the office of Grandee of the First Class [Spain] in 1734. He held the office of Spanish Ambassador to Naples between 1734 and 1738. He succeeded to the title of 2nd Duque de Liria y Xerica on 12 June 1734.

He died on 2 June 1738 at age 41 at Naples, Italy.

Marriage

James Fitzjames-Stuart was married to Catalina Ventura de Portugal-Columbus (9th Duquesa de Veragua y de La Vega) the daughter of Pedro Manuel Nuño de Portugal-Columbus (7th Duque de Veragua and Teresa Mariana de Toledo), on 31 December 1716.
