Biography

Bridget Fitzpatrick was born in Ireland[1]. Records of her birth year ranges from 1819 (on the tombstone) [2] to 1822, 1824, 1828, and 1830 in various censuses.

Her brother, Daniel Fitzpatrick, said in his 1850 US naturalization papers that he was from Colt, Queen's County (now Laois County) in Ireland. [3] Bridget is likely from the same area and may have been born there.

She and her mother, Ellza, and her brother Edward Fitzpatrick and sisters Margaret and Ann all came to the US c. 1845.

By 1850, she was in Steuben County, New York, USA, with her husband John D. Kelley. Their son Joseph was born in Corning. [4]

  • 1860 Corning New York USA - Bridgett (sic) (b. 1824) is living with her husband John Kelley and their children Joseph Kelley 10, Elizabeth Kelley 8, John T Kelley 6, Daniel Kelley 4, Bridgett Kelley 2, and Edward (6 months).[6]
  • 1870 Corning New York USA - Bridget Kelly (sic) is living with her husband John Kelly (sic) [occupation: mason] and their children Joseph, Elizabeth, John, Daniel, Bridget and Thomas E.[7]. Birth year is given as 1830.
  • 1880 - 2 First Street, Corning New York USA - Bridget Kelley is living with her husband John and their children Daniel, T. Edward, Elizabeth, Bridget, and an adopted daughter Mary.[8]. Birth year is given as 1828.
  • 1892 - Bridget and John were living in Corning NY with Albert Kelley (a relative?), their son Thomas (aka Edward) and his wife Catherine, her three daughters by an earlier marriage (Margaret, Catherine, Louisa), Thomas's son Daniel (from an earlier marriage) and Thomas and Catherine's infant son Thomas. [9] Bridget's birth year is given as 1822.


Death

Bridget died on 6 Feb 1897 in Corning New York. [10]

OBITUARY - Corning Daily Democrat, 6 Feb 1897 "Mrs. Bridget Kelly (sic), wife of John Kelly, of 29 West First Street, died at 12:30 this afternoon, aged 72 years. She leaves beside her husband the following children: Joseph and Edward, of Corning, Mrs. John Kelly, Mrs. B. Maher, 5th Ward, Daniel of Louisville Ky. John of St. Louis, Mo. The funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from St. Mary's Church."

She is buried in the Kelley family plot at St. Mary's Orthodox Cemetery in South Corning. [11] along with her husband, their son Daniel, and their son Thomas Edward (aka Edward Thomas) and his fifth (and final) wife Anna. Bridget's other children are buried in other places in that cemetery.

Her brother Daniel, four sisters, and mother are buried nearby. Her younger brother is buried in Williamsport PA.
