Biography

Nicholas was born in the parish of Denofore, County Kilkenny, Ireland, in the Kingdom of Great Britain on August 15, 1787. Nicholas arrived in Boston on May 1, 1827 and thereafter he resided in Lowell, Massachusetts with his family who also immigrated with him from Ireland.

In the 1830 U.S. Federal Census Record, it is noted that Nicholas, in addition to himself as Head of Household, has 2 males (age 10-14, sons), 1 female (age 5-10, daughter), and 1 female (age 30-39, wife) included in household. All five family members are noted as "Aliens, Foreigners Not Naturalized," and likely immigrated from Ireland with Nicholas on or about 1827. The five household members are assumed to be Nicholas (self), wife Mary Ann (aka "Ann"), and their three children: Catherine, James, and Martin.

Nicholas was naturalized as a U.S. citizen in December 1833 at the Municipal Court in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

Per the 1850 U.S. Federal Census Record, Nicholas was married to Ann (aka "Mary Ann") whose birth name is unknown. No other household members are noted within this census record. Other recorded information within the 1850 Census designates Nicholas's occupation as "Dyer" and his Lowell real estate valued at $3,700.

Nicholas was head of household in 1860 in the Federal Census that year. He was enumerated at age 77 that year and his wife "Ann" age 67.

Nicholas passed away at age 88 on April 18, 1869, about five years after his wife's death, which was due to an accident. In his death record, Nicholas is noted to be a "laborer." His will was probated on July 8, 1869 in Middlesex County, Francis N. Haviland being his administrator/executor.
