Biography
Hon. Emily Jane Mercer-Elphinstone de Flahault, Lady Nairne was born on 16 May 1819. She was the daughter of Auguste Charles Joseph de Flahault, Comte de Flahault de la Billardrie and Margaret Mercer Elphinstone, Baroness Keith.
She married Henry Petty-FitzMaurice, 4th Marquess of Lansdowne, son of Henry Petty-FitzMaurice, 3rd Marquess of Lansdowne and Lady Louisa Emma Fox-Strangways, on 1 November 1843 at British Embassy, Vienna, Austria.
She died on 26 June 1895 at age 76 at Meikleour House, Perthshire, Scotland.
Her married name became Petty-FitzMaurice. As a result of her marriage, Hon. Emily Jane Mercer-Elphinstone-de Flahault, Lady Nairne was styled as Marchioness of Lansdowne on 31 January 1863. She succeeded to the title of 8th Lady Nairne [S., 1681] on 4 August 1874, suo jure. On 4 August 1874 she was recognised as Baroness Nairne by the House of Lords.
