The couple settled on a farm in De Soto, Louisiana. In 1870, Emmeline (37) lived with William (44) and their children Henrietta (13), Ellen (7), Jane (5), Clinton (3) and Charles D (1)[1].

In 1880, Emmeline ("43") lived with William (54), Clinton (12), Ella (16), Jane (14), Charlie D (11), Emma (9), William (7), Maggie (4) and baby Martin, only four months old. Clinton and Charlie helped their father on the farm, while Ella and Jane worked with Emmeline keeping the house[2].
