Biography

This profile is part of the Flanagan Name Study.

Joseph Charles Flanagan was born on 22 Jun 1884 in Denver, Colorado. He was the son of Timothy Flanagan and Catherine Donnelly. His father was from County Roscommon, Ireland and his mother from Wisconsin.

In 1900, Joseph (16) lived on High Street in South Erie Town, Weld, Colorado, with his father Timothy (49), his mother Catherine (44) and his siblings John (14), Thadeus (10) and Bernard (6). He was attending school at the time. His father worked as a section foreman in the mines[1].

By 1910, Joseph (26) had moved to Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri to live with his cousins. They were John G Herald (41), an Ohio born building contractor, his wife Katie (37) from Wisconsin and their children Frederick J (14), Irene M (9) and Catherine (7). Joseph was a carpenter[2].

Joseph met Florence Bradley in Missouri and married her on 30 Apr 1917[3] [4]. When they moved back to Colorado, her family came with them.

He was registered for the World War I draft in 1917. His address at the time was 1049 Federal Berd, Denver, Colorado. He was thirty four years old. He was a general circulation manager for the Rocky Mountain News, a daily newspaper published in Denver. He was recorded as being tall and stout with grey eyes and dark brown hair[5].

In 1920, Joseph (36) lived with Florence (35) in Denver, Colorado with her mother Mary A Bradley (56) and siblings Edward (29), Anna (26), Agnes (24) and Leo (23). Joseph was a circulation manager for the daily paper[6].

Joseph later moved to Illinois. In 1930, he was forty six years old and lived with Florence (45), his mother in law Mary A (66) and sister in law Anna (36) in Oak Park, Cook, Illinois. He still held his position in the newspaper and they may have moved because of his job[7].

He died on 25 Jun 1954 in Rural Chikaming, Berrien, Michigan, aged seventy years old[8]. He was buried on 28 Jun 1954 in St Joseph's Cemetery in River Grove, Cook, Illinois[9].
