Biography

Catherine (Flanagan) Bennett, was the daughter of Richard Flannagan and Anna King, of Ireland.^[1][2]

She was born July 22, 1841, according to her death certificate, yet census data fairly consistently makes her 4 years older, so born about 1837, which is listed as her birth year in the 1900 Census data. She was born in Ireland (Northern Ireland according to daughter Alice's 1930 Census data).

She married about 1850, Daniel Bennett. Their first child was born about 1851. There is an unresolved discrepancy. If she was born in 1841, she was only ten when she had her first child in 1851. Even born 1837, makes her very young. I suppose the older children in the census might not be hers or, for that matter, they might not be children of Daniel.  I think hers because she states in the 1900 Census that she had 14 ch. 9 living.  Twelve children have been positively identified.  Youngest Alice was b 1878. 14 ch x 2 years between is 28 years. 1878-28=1850

She and Daniel and their children immigrated to America between 1856 (birth of Annie in Ireland) and 1865 (birth of Jane in New York). More specifically her death certificate says she was here 50 years, so 1865, or the 1900 US Census says in 1860.

She died, of pneumonia, January 14, 1915, in Brooklyn, New York, at 104 Bergen St. ^[1]

• Catherine, head of household, born July 1837, age 62, Widow, she had 15 children, 9 were still living. She and her parents were born in Ireland. She immigrated in 1860 and had been here 40 years. She (and the children) read and wrote English, and she rented her House.
• Daniel, son, born Dec 1873, age 26, single, born in New York, occupation Gardener, read and wrote English.
• Jennie, Daughter, born Oct 1874, age 23, single, born in New York, worked as a Saleslady in a Dry goods store.
• Alice, daughter, born Sept 1878, age 21, single, born in New York, worked as a Saleslady in a Dry goods store.

1910 US Census: Brooklyn Ward 10, Kings Co., New York. Bergen St.: {Despite discrepancies in age, this is probably the right Catherine and Jane.}

• Bennett, Catherine E, age 65, widow, married 1 time for 47 years. She had 14 children, 9 were still living, she and parents were born in Ireland.
• Bennett, Jane F, daughter, age 29, single, worked in a dept store, born in NY.

2. Catherine born about 1852 in Ireland. In 1915, Catherine Bennett, "daughter" of the deceased, Catherine (Flanagan) Bennett employed the undertaker.^[1]

4. Anne "Annie" born about 1856 in Ireland m. Dougherty (spelling?)
5. Jane, age 3 mos, so born b. about March 1865, was listed in the 1865 Census. Not listed in the 1870 census.

7. Joseph born about 1867 in Brooklyn, NY. Joseph Bennett, age 52 (b. c. 1871) widowed, white, driver, died 28 Jun 1923, Brooklyn, buried Holy Cross Cemetery ("Select Ground" Row 8 Plot 41), 30 June 1923.^[5]
8. Richard born about 1868 in Brooklyn, NY. Died 4 Feb 1946 in Manhattan.^[6]
9. Daughter bapt. or born 24 Jan 1870 was baptized.^[7]
10. Daniel born Dec 1873 in Brooklyn, NY. Daniel died 29 Jul 1930 and was buried at Holy Cross Cemetery.^[8] Ancestry's " U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007" has a birth date of 22 December 1872.
11. Jane F "Jennie" born Oct 1874 in Brooklyn, NY. Jennie Frances Bennett died 16 May 1943, age 68 b. 14 Oct 1874 in Brooklyn; buried Holy Cross Cemetery 19 May 1943. Single, white, housekeeper, lived at 364 8th St. Brooklyn.^[9]
12. Alice born 23 Sept 1878 in Brooklyn, New York.
13. Two or three more who died, without being recorded in the US or New York Censuses. There is a large gap between 1856 and 1866. Possibly Dan Bennet, son of Dan Bennet and Cath Flannigan, born 31 May 1863, baptized 7 June 1863 at St. Pauls Catholic Church in Brooklyn.^[10] this is a good possibility but I didn't find any other children baptized (in the index) at St. Paul's.
