Biography

Hanora "Anna" Flanagan was born at Garryowen in Dubuque County, Iowa. At the age of five, she came with her parents to the vicinity of Beresford in Union County, Dakota Territory. Anna lived in a dugout just north of where the St. Joseph Church was located at Emmet, Dakota Territory. In 1884, she married Peter Gard; and, the couple farmed at Emmet, South Dakota for a number of years before moving to Beresford, South Dakota in 1904.

After the death of her husband, Anna lived with her daughter, Alma Crowningshield at Sioux City, Iowa. In 1935, she and her daughter moved to Des Moines, Iowa. Anna died at Mrs. Crowningshield's home after a year-long illness.
