Howell C Flanagan was born on 4 Sep 1809 in Hinesburg, Addison County, Vermont. He was the son of John Flanagan and Martha Towner.

He was married to Eliza Love.

He was listed as one of the heads of household in Hinesburg, Chittenden, in 1840^[3].

In 1850, Howell (40) lived with Eliza (38), Lucy (20) and George (14). Harman H Ray (23), Mary L Ray (1) and John Roman (24) were their boarders. Howell ran a small farm^[4].

Howell (50) lived with Eliza (48), George (24) and Elizabeth (5) in 1860. Their boarders were Moses La Bell (49) and Lucy Love (81)^[5].

By 1870, Howell (60) and Eliza (58) were running a hotel. Amanda (15) lived with them^[6].

Eliza died in 1879.

By 1880, Howell (70) lived with his son George (43), his wife Hannah (41), his grandchildren Luttie (20), Gertrude (12), George (8), Josephine (4) and Mary (1), a boarder named C Beaman Willis (27) and their domestic servants Libbie Gilbert (26) and Ellen Bushey (15). George was a hotel keeper and Howell worked on their farm^[7].

He remarried Rebecca Griffin.

Howell died on 24 Aug 1896 in Hinesburg. He was eighty seven years old. His occupation was given as a tanner and his cause of death as "shock"^[8]. He was buried in Hinesburg Village Cemetery^[9].
