Alfred Flatow was a gymnast from Germany that was a part of the German Gymnastics Team at the 1896 Olympics in Athens, Greece. He was very successful at the Olympics winning gold in the individual parallel bars and the team events for the the parallel bars and the horizontal bar. Alfred also placed second in the individual horizontal bar. His cousin, Gustav Flatow, was also a member of the German Gymnastics Team, and won gold in the team events. [1][2][3]
Alfred was Jewish and he was forced to flee to the Netherlands in 1938. When the Nazis invaded the Netherlands, he was sent to Theresienstadt Concentration Camp. He died there on December 28, 1942 at 73 years of age. His cousin Gustav was also sent to Theresienstadt, and died there in 1945.[4][5]
Alfred was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1981.[6]
