The Flax Family sailed to South Africa, FROM CANADA, in the early 1900s. Due to a measles breakout, they were quarantined in Cape Town harbour. Annie and sister told DAUGHTER Josephine of the months where they just sat and watched Table Mountain.

They later moved to Johannesburg.

I was born near the coastal city of Durban as an adoption had been arranged as Queenie[grandmother] would not have her daughter Cynthia keep the illegitimate child.

I moved to Johannesburg at the age of 19. Met the Flax family after my adopted mother Mary died when I was 21.

Cynthia wanted me to change my name formally to FLAX and convert me to Judaism, as I had been raised "incorrectly" and would therefore not be accepted as Jewish.

Hi Sharon -thank you for being a member of the Jewish Roots Project! I wanted to let you know about some new things we have going on.

- You can see new tabs at the top of our home page, where you can select topics to view or work on. You can also use our new maintenance categories - feel free to add them to your own family, or any other Jewish Roots profile, or work on the maintenance yourself, such as adding new records to profiles with only a couple sources.

-I'm sending an invitation to join GoogleGroups, which we are re-starting this week. We'll probably do most group chat there, but the most important things will be posted on G2G, which you will be notified about if you follow the jewish_roots tag. -You can also join Wikitree's discord server, where we have a Jewish Roots chat channel.

-If you have ideas or suggestions for the project, feel free to reply here or send me a message.

Thank you! -Elaine, co-leader for Jewish Roots Project

Thank you!

I need more help than you can possibly imagine. I was adopted out of the culture and have spent over half a century trying to find out who's who. Both families swept everything under carpets. I would be grateful to any info.

Hi Sharon,

It’s time for our annual Ireland Project check-in! Please respond within the next two weeks to let me know:

  • If you are happy with the team you’re on or if you’d like to make a change. It is now required that all members with an Ireland project badge work on at least one of the project’s team(s), so if you’ve not yet signed up please do so in your reply to this check-in.
  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within two weeks, we will assume you are no longer interested in participating in the Ireland Project, and your badge will be removed. If you wish to reapply for membership later, we will be happy to have you back. Many thanks, and I look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely,

Jen Hutton, on behalf of the Ireland Project

Hi Sharon,

I need you to remove the category "Irish Roots" from your profile. It is only used on project managed profiles, and never on the profile of a living person. The sticker (which it looks like you have found) is used instead.

Thanks, Jen Hutton, Ireland Project co-leader

Hi again! I just remembered we have a new sticker - Template: Heritage Sticker. This sticker might be what you're looking for? For example...
Flag of Lithuania
Sharon is proud of her Lithuanian heritage.

coding - without the final }

{{Heritage Sticker|image=Flags-13.png|imagetext=Flag of Lithuania|heritage=Lithuanian|female=yes}

Hi! if you add a second closing brace to the coding on your profile, the sticker should display correctly...

instead of ending the string of coding with |female=yes}

it needs to end |female=yes}}

}} instead of }

Dear Liz - Patron Saint of my challenges

Perhaps I could ask you for more assistance? I mistakenly created a mismatch rather than merging 2 profiles and don't know how to fix. Flax-47 and Flax-65 I created the first ages ago and only 3 days ago, his daughter Cindy Lewis found me via this, but she'd created 65. I can't copy all the info she's added as I'm not on the trusted list for her mom etc. I panicked when I saw the message that if I merged I might lose something. He is definitely the same dude and I'm now incontact with him via email. He, like me, was born Flax and adopted. Now at in our 50s we've connected. Thank you again

Just took a look & it seems you figured it out. Congratulations!

for reference... the parameter for adding the file name of an image is often "|image=" , not "|file=". For the Migrating Ancestor sticker, the parameters for the flag images are |origin-flag= and |destination-flag=

for the Nonmigrating Ancestor sticker (which, despite its name, can be used for those who migrated also), the parameter is |flag=

See these Template pages for details:

Also, could you post your comment about the Lithuanian flag post-1918 & the Russian flag prior to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Flags The entry there for the Lithuanian flag notes that it is current & was in use from 1918-1940. If that is not correct, let me know & I'll change it.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. I just re-looked at your question: "With migrating ancestors, Lithuania only became a republic in 1918. If ancestors left before then, should the flag is the FROM country be RUSSIA or Lithuania?" I would answer Russia. The "Origin" image for the migrating ancestor template should be representative of the place at the time the person left. Although, many people do use a more recognizable image (such as the Virginia flag for Virginia Colony, which existed before the flag and even before Virginia's seal, which is the image on the flag).

Hope that answers your questions! Give me a holler if you need help.

edit - corrected my oops on the parameter names & added the following, which is the coding for the sticker that appears in my reply to this comment (I forgot that the news Comments format translates sticker coding into the sticker itself). The following drops the second opening brace so that the coding stays visible:

{Migrating Ancestor |origin= France |destination= Canada |origin-flag= Flags.png |destination-flag= Flags-1.png }}

ack! I got the parameter names backwards... I'll edit my previous post, but the parameters for the flag images in the Migrating Ancestor template are |origin-flag= and |destination-flag=

Example from https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Migrating_Ancestor

{Migrating Ancestor |origin= France |destination= Canada |origin-flag= Flags.png |destination-flag= Flags-1.png }}

Hi Liz

Confused! No one was in France :-) Does this mean that you have updated the flag to say ancestors migrated to CANADA? My grandad was born in Canada - Morris- but his siblings and parents were from Lithuania. They all then emigrated >>> immigrated to the Union of South Africa in the early 1900s. Could you possibly help with this - as there's probably a tag or thingy missing? Further - thank to some previous work I managed to do on Wiki, have just met my first cousin - Michael Lewis - one I created, the other his recently joined daughter, Cindy lewis created. Much work to be done on this Flax-65 Flax-47 Lewis-47272 unable to merge as apparently Michael has to accept. Michael is son of my aunt Marcel [not marcelle] - sister to my biological mother Cynthia. We were both adopted. What a mess Thank you in advance for anything that you can do or can redirect Bountiful blessings to you

I was trying to respond to your request about a sticker to show migration. You can fill in the Migrating Ancestor sticker as needed to display the information you wish to display. Probably the sticker's template page explains it better. See Template: Migrating Ancestor.

France/Canada were simply in the coding example that I sent you. I've edited that post so that it doesn't display the sticker, just shows the coding. Hopefully that will be less confusing.

You need to select the origin, destination (text) and the images that you wish to replace the example entries.

Dear Liz

I am so sorry and I think I may have missed this entire ... Please do go ahead. There's far too much mystery in this particular forest. Due to the circumstances under which the family fled - many never connected again in different parts of the world. Just today, a miracle in fact, thank to wikitree, 2 cousins have just landed in my inbox - I really had given up hope as an impossible. I was previously chased out of the RUSSIAN box and also from the SLAVIC roots box, then I gave up. The Balkan lot are apparently not slavic and there were ??? about the Jews in that sector belonging to neither. Please do whatever is in the power of your knowledge - hugely appreciated. blessings on your geni journey

i have no knowledge of the history of the area, which is why I'd asked you to post what corrections are needed as a comment on the Space: Flags page - with a source too please.

Congratulations on connecting with cousins!!

Cheers, Liz

Hi Sharon and welcome to WikiTree. Re your G2G post try - https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/ it's a free site where you can search and access birth, death and marriage records under "civil records" back to 1864.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/ is the site for census info 1901 and 1911 - again it's free and searchable.

Good luck,

Maria ( Co-Leader Ireland Project)
