Dickson Fleming, son of Peter and Sarah (Caughey) Fleming, was born in Preble County, Ohio, on April 24, 1822[1].

Dickson had only a basic education, which was typical of the times, but was an avid reader, and through this taught himself many important things. He went to California for a short time, but returned east because of his health[1].

Capt. Fleming married Ann Howe, daughter of Ichabod and Eunice, on Mar 4, 1852[2]. They had two children Fred and Allie[1][3].

He resided in Warren County, Indiana[1], where he purchased 160 acres from the United States Land Office[4].

Capt. Fleming was a "man of sterling qualities," a republican, and a Universalist[1].

He acquired his rank, during the Civil War, when he enlisted in 1861 (10th Regiment, Indiana Infantry for 3 months[5]) and re-enlisted in 1862. However once again his ill-health caused the necessity of his returning home[1].

1870 US Census Pike, Warren, Indiana, post office of Williamsport, lists the family of Dickson Fleming: Dickson age 48 born in Ohio; Ann Fleming, age 46, Fred Fleming age 11; and Allie Fleming age 8.

He died Jan 8, 1873. Photo of gravestone at find a grave: West Lebanon, Warren County, Indiana, USA
