Obituary in the Clutha Leader, Feb 22 1910. With his wife and young son, Alexander Fleming left London for New Zealand in December 1863 aboard the Lady Milton (passengers included a Shetland teenager named Robert Stout, a future prime minister and chief justice of New Zealand). The boat arrived at the Bluff in April 1864, by which time the Flemings boasted a second son. The family settled in Otokia. 'in the long space of 45 years he saw a wonderful change on the face of the (Taieri) plain. From being an almost isolated settler on the riverbank he saw the swamps gradually reclaimed until today from hill to hill there are cultivated fields and numerous homesteads....His share of the changed scene was no light one, but few know and still fewer can realise the long years of work that was little short of slavery that was his portion.
Daughter Barbara's death notice described her as the "fourth daughter" of the couple, so there may be another daughter we have overlooked.
