William was born about 1841. He arrived in New Zealand in 1860 and did some gold-digging around the West Coast and Tokomairiro. He took up farming in the Southbridge district about 1868. The locality "Flemington", to which he first came in 1877, is said to be named after him. [1][2][3][4]
He was an avid cheese-maker; winning shows in Ashburton and teaching his neighbours. He himself originally learned at his father's farm in Ayrshire, Scotland. He was said to be a doctor, a veterinary surgeon, and engineer. He brought draught horses over from Australia.
He lived in Edendale, Southland for a period then settled in Lismore. He spent his final days in Tinwald.
He had two wives throughout his life. He married Martha Anderson in 1867. [5] He later married Grace Brown in 1896.
He passed away in 1925 and is buried in Ashburton Cemetery. [6]
