James was born about 1773, son of John Fleming and Betsy Ford. He passed sometime away after 1794, as he was listed on his father's will at that time.[1]
There are many listings on Ancestry.com that show a death date of 6 Sep 1831, most likely from a findagrave[2] listing showing same. However, that date corresponds to a Burke County, NC will that is most likely the same James Fleming. It states quite specifically: "[A]s to my land I want my mother and my brother John Fleming to be supported their natural lifetimes of the land and I want my four sisters, to wit."[3] He then lists the sisters' names: Peggy, Isabella, Betsy, and Mahaly Fleming. None of this corresponds to James Ford Fleming and his known family. As his mother died in 1775, it is unlikely he would be specifying for her care. Even if he were considering Jane Hord Fleming his mother, quite a possibility, by this date, she too had already died.
