Biography

European Aristocracy
Reiner Fleming was a member of the aristocracy in England.

Reiner III was the son of John Fleming I and raised at Clifton. He "was not yet of age" in 1235 when his father left "his manors of Wath, Dalton, Clifton, and Routhmele" in a trust.[1] As an adult, he made his family home at Wath Hall. He married Eglantine Horbury from a neighboring family. Her father, Ralph, gave as a dowry a bovate of land in Brampton and Darfield.[2][3][4][5][6]

  • Dec 1228 - "Institution of Richard filius Roberti to that mediety of the church of Derfeud, which Rein' Flandr' held, on the presentation of Wm. Flandr'.[8]
  • 12 Jun 1244 - "he transferred to Walter son of Robert de Grey the advowson of a moiety of the church of Darfield, receiving in exchange the advowson of a third of the chruch of Wath."[4][9]
  • 1244 - Appointed Rob' Hersey as clerk to the church of Wath.[10]
  • 1247-8 - "he claimed damages of 300li against John le Fleming (his father) for having sold tenements in the manors of Dalton, Clifton and Rathmell to Sallay abbey and others contrary to the fine made (in 1234-5); afterwards they made an agreement."[4]
  • 1250 - "he impetuously opened a market on his estate at Wortley ever week, on Sundays, but the Prior of Pontefract opposed the innovation and it had to be dropped."[2][11][12]
  • 27 Oct 1252 - "we find him granting a liberal pension to his Clerk, and the deed gives us a glimpse of Sir Reiner Fleming III. and Lady Eglantine holding their three weeks court at Wath, the company including, at least three other Knights, and requiring the services of a senschal and a clerk:"[2]
    • "Unto all men, Reiner Fleming, son of John Fleming, Greeting. Be it known that I have granted to William de Edricthorpe, my clerk, for his service and to his heirs, that bovate of land which he bought of Hugo de Edricthorpe and XII. acres of land, which he bought of John de Bactley in the territory of Darfield., Given on the Vigil of the Apostles, St. Simon and St. Jude, in the year of grace 1252, in my full court ; in the presence of Sir (Domino) Thomas de Horbir, John dc Bosevile.s Robert de Ecclesale, Knights ; Ralph Hadkct, Nicho de Shapelay, Johe de Batelay, Reiner de Wombwell, Roger de Ecclesfleld, William dc Swinton, Ralph de Ecclesfleld, then seneschall of the court of Waht, Roger de Rodes, William de Clif, Winoc Albo, and many others."[13]
  • 1 Sep 1254 - "Exemption, at the instance of John de Grey, of Reyner le Flemmeng from being put on assizes, juries or recognitions, and from being made sheriff, coroner, escheator, forester, verderer, agister, regarder, inquisitor or other bailiff of the king, against his will."[14]
  • >1240 - "Sir Reiner, along with his relatives, John and Thomas Fleming of Dalton, often witnessed the Charters of Fountains Abbey, referring to lands in the Calder Valley 1240-1260, and his son Sir William III. witnessed them from about 1271."[2][4]
  • 1276 - His widow, "Egglentine", was receiving rent for land in Brampton.[15]
