James Fleming was born about 1839 in Ontario, Canada to Thomas Fleming and Matilda (Mason) Fleming.
In 1851 "Janes Flaming" (age 12) lived in Egremont, Ontario with his father Thomas (37, Farmer), mother Matilda (34), and four siblings: Samuel (15), Stewart (14), John (10), and Thomas (7).[1][2]
In 1861 James Fleming (age 21, Labourer) lived in Egremont with his father Thos (45, Farmer), mother Matilda (43), uncle Samuel (49, Weaver), and three brothers: Stewart (22, Labourer), John (19, Labourer), and Thos (15, Labourer).[3][4]
James Fleming married Maria Jane Aldred on 8 Jul 1863 in Grey County, Ontario.[5]
James and Mary Jane had at least seven children: Ezekiel Fleming (1864-1941), Thomas James Wellington Fleming (1866-1948), Catherine Matilda (Fleming) McLeod (1871-1951), Mary Jane Fleming (1873-), Martha Ann Fleming (1875-), Edith Agnes Fleming (1876-), and Janet Fernetta Fleming (1878-).
In 1871 James Fleming (age 29, a farmer) lived in Egremont with his wife Mary Jane (24) and their three children: Ezekiel (7), Thos. W. Wellington (5), and Catherine M. (1 month).[6] The next household is that of Thomas Fleming, James' father.
In 1881 James Fleming (age 38, a farmer) lived in Egremont with his wife Mary Jane (34) and their six children: Eseekiel (17), Thomas Jas. (15), Catherine Matilda (10), Mary Jane (8), Martha Ann (6), and Janet Foinetta (3).[7]
James Fleming and family moved to the Northwest Territories in 1882 along with his mother and three of his brothers and their families - they settled in what is now Summerberry, Saskatchewan.
James' wife Mary Jane Fleming passed away in 1882.
James Fleming of the Northwest Territories married Kate Crittenden of Egremont, Ontario on 15 Mar 1883 in Priceville, Ontario.[8]
James and Kate had seven children: Margaret Fleming (1884-), Henry "Harry" Fleming (1889-1965), Howard Fleming (1890-1920), Roy Fleming (1892-), Hazel (Fleming) Biden (1896-1990), Gladys Fleming (1896-), and Laura Viola (Fleming) Taylor (1898-1965).
In 1891 James Fleming (age 49, a farmer) lived in the North West Territories (now Saskatchewan) with his wife Katherine (35), and six children: Zekiel (20), Martha (16), Jeannette (13), Margaret (6), Harry (2), and Howard (7 months). Some of his brothers lived nearby with their families.[9]
James Fleming passed away 17 Nov 1897 in Summerberry, Saskatchewan. He is buried in Summerberry Cemetery with his second wife Catherine (Crittenden) Fleming.[10]
