"Nathan married Rose Anna Fleming before marrying Amanda Mains Staggs. They were married on February 17, 1853 in Parke County, Indiana.
In April 1858, they had settled near Humboldt Allen County, Kansas, along with her parents. The following July, Sarah Rebecca Butler, was born. The town of Humboldt was heavily involved in what was known as "Bleeding Kansas". The town was raided several times by bushwhackers from Missouri. It was a violent time.
Nathan enlisted with the 10th Kansas Infantry on September 17, 1861. The next month, Humboldt, was burned to the ground by a group of raiders. Rose Anna and Sarah were probably living with her parents after Nathan enlisted. Although they lived 3 miles south of Humboldt, they may have been affected by the raid.
Rose Anna died between 1860-1865 and Sarah was raised by Rose Anna's parents. Nathan was dishonorably discharged on September 24, 1863 for excessive drinking.
Nathan never returned to his daughter, Sarah, nor did he contact her in any way...."
Story credited to Anita McKinney, great-great granddaughter of Sarah Rebecca Butler.
