Biography

Bernice (aka "Burnis") Guellen Fleshman was born on October 7, 1772, in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, to Robert Moses "Mose" Fleshman, and his wife, Elizabeth (Thompson) Fleshman.

On December 12, 1889, at 17 years old, she married 22-year-old James E. Smith, b: March 10, 1867 in Roane County, West Virginia. They married in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, USA, and settled there. The couple had at least 2 daughters: [1]

  1. Minnie Florence Smith b: 30 Aug. 1890 in Greenbrier Co., WV
  2. Elsie "Ocie" Smith b: 14 January 1896 in Greenbrier Co., WV

On the 1900 US Census, James E. Smith's family was reported: [2]

James Edward Smith died on February 9, 1939 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. He was buried at the Rainelle Cemetery, Rainelle, Greenbrier, West Virginia, USA. The photo of his gravestone shows the space reserved for his wife's name etc. defaced/obliterated. [6] The only Find A Grave memorial for "Bernice G. Smith" born in 1872 is for a woman who died in 1959 at about 86 years old. She was buried at Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Prince George's County, Maryland, USA. [7]
