Jack was the second child of Guy Engles Fletcher and Elva Patsy Shannon.

Between 1936 and 1939 he moved to Hutchinson, Kansas, where he married Patricia Carroll.

In 1940 Jack was working as a grocery warehouse man in Hutchinson.

"Jack and Patricia had a son, Vernon Carroll Fletcher, who was born the day before Jack reported for induction into the US Navy in Mar 1944. He was stationed at the Farragut Naval Training facility in Idaho. After training, when Vernon was three months old, Jack returned to Hutchinson for a quick visit before he deployed. That would be the last time he saw him. He left San Diego for Pearl Harbor where he met his ship, the USS Reid. The Reid left Pearl Harbor on 22 Aug 1941 and was destroyed and sunk in Leyte Gulf, on 11 Dec 1944, with Uncle Jack and 102 of his shipmates. His loss has been felt for generations."[1]
