Biography

Captain Pelatiah Fletcher served with 6th Regiment, Middlesex County Militia, Massachusetts Bay Colony Militia during the American Revolution.

Pelatiah Fletcher was one of the wealthiest men of his time in Westford, Massachusetts; he was known to own one slave during his lifetime. Shortly after the Revolutionary War began, he was chosen to lead the 4th company (first Westford), 6th regiment of Middlesex County, Massachusetts. ^[1] He was commissioned on 24 Apr 1776. While some of the men from Westford were serving elsewhere during the war, he used his wealth to provide financial aid to the needy families of the town.

Some records indicate that Pelatiah was born in Westford. However, the town was incorporated in 1729 after breaking off from Chelmsford. His first name is also incorrectly spelled as "Peletiah" in some records as well.

The house where he was born and lived throughout his life still stands in Westford, on Lowell Road. This house is known to have been built prior to 1700; however, to date the year of its construction has not been definitively determined, but it may have been on the property as early as 1677, when the property was bought by his ancestors.
