Biography

Celia was born in 1837. She passed away in 1901.

1853[1] Celia Ann Fletcher was married to Edward Dye, in Marion, Missouri on 9 Jan 1853 and had 1 child by him, William Ramey Dye b @1854. Mr. Dye died in 1854 and she married Benjamin Fugate 12 Oct 1856.

1853 Sylvester Fletcher has land records in 1853 in Hickory Co MO so they (Celia and Benjamin probably met in Hickory Co.

Lucinda Adeline Marsh Fugate, Celia's daughter in law told a story about Celia, to Burl Fugate, Lucinda Adeline's grandson. "During the civil war, sometime between April of 1862 and April of 1865 while Benjamin Fugate was off soldiering, Celia was left to hold down the fort as best she could, with 4 small children with her. The oldest was about 9 years old and the youngest was about one or 2. One day five men all armed came to their barn yard and started to go in with the purpose of taking a good young horse that they owned. Celia stepped out on the back porch with a rifle in her hands and pointed it at them and in a firm clear voice told them to leave their horse alone. The obvious leader of the group who was dismounted said in a derisive tone of voice, "lady you can't get all five of us." She answered, 'you're right mister, but you wont be here to count them as I'm shooting you first." This action was no bluff or pretense on her part as she meant every word and was ready to back it up to the best of her ability. The end result was that this band rode away and they got to keep their horse."

She was a housewife. She died 28 Feb. 1901 and is buried at Bowers Chapel[2] in Urbana. The funeral was by Rev. Madison Reser, of Urbana, MO. At the time of the funeral, she had 10 children living, and 30 grandchildren. All except 1, Charles Fugate of Muskogee Indian Terr. were at the funeral. She died of cancer.
