Biography

Samuel Fletcher was born 23 July 1664 in Chelmsford, Massachusetts to Samuel Fletcher and Margaret Hailstone.^[1][2][3]

He married Mary Cotton. Chelmsford Vital Records report two dates for their marriage: 3 September 1684^[4]and 7 June 1692^[5]The Fletcher family history uses the 1692 date^[6]as does the Find a Grave entry.^[7]

Samuel died 24 January 1705 in Chelmsford.^[8] He is buried in Forefathers Burial Ground, Chelmsford, Massachusetts.^[7]

NOTES

There were at least three Samuel Fletchers in the Chelmsford area in the late 1600's. They were first cousins of the sons of Robert Fletcher: one born to William Fletcher and Lydia Bates, one born to his brother Francis and Elizabeth Wheeler, and one born to brother Samuel and Margaret Hailstone. It is easy to get them confused, and likely has happened in records in the past. For example, the Fletcher Family History lists a birth date of 23 Jul 1664 for the Samuel born to William and Lydia, when the Chelmsford Vital Records assign that birth date to the Samuel of this profile, the one born to Samuel and Margaret (see below). It also appears that some of their children have been mixed up. Suggest some caution with these related Fletchers, and also their spouses, many of whom were Wheelers.

"Descendants of Robert Fletcher of Concord, Massachusetts: the first six generations", completed in 1950 by Winifred Lovering Holman makes it clear that the E. H. Fletcher book contains a number of errors including the birthdate of Samuel. Holman's extensive research into wills and property transactions have clarified much of the confusion noted above. The Holman manuscript is held by NEHGS.
