Biography

Mary was born in about 1837. She is the daughter of William Fletcher and Sophia Bishop

Mary first appears in the 1841 census at the age of 5
She is living with both her parents and her 3 sisters Ann, Martha and Betsy

Mary's father dies in 1844

By the 1851 census the 14 year old Mary is now working as a framework knitter
Her sister Martha has now married and Ann is is now working elsewhere as a domestic servant.
This just leaves Mary's mother and her sister Betsy in the household

In 1861 Mary is still living in Broughton Astley with her mother Sophia and working as a framework knitter.
The only other person in the household is the newly born Elizabeth Ann Fletcher. She is listed as Sophia's grandaughter.
As Sophia had no sons it is possible that she is the illegitimate child of one of Sophia's daughters

In 1865 Mary marries George Blockley, also from Broughton Astley

The 1871 census shows Mary, still in Broughton, living with her husband and there 2 daughters Sarah Jane 3 and Emma 1.
Sophia and her grandaughter Elizabeth are still in the same household.

Mary's mother Sophia dies in 1878

By 1881 Mary has had 2 more daughters Mary 8 and Martha 4.Betsy is still at home but her daughter Sarah Jane and Elizabeth Fletcher are now away working as domestic servants for the Record family in Frowlesworth, Leicestershire

Mary seems to have passed away sometime between 1881 and 1891 as she disappears from the census records. Although there may be another cause as no record of her death has yet been found.
