The Fletcher family was a large and prosperous Quaker family that settled in North Carolina. They owned a large plantation that passed down through generations of Ralphs to Mary's father, Ralph Fletcher III. Mary's parents, Ralph Fletcher III and Mary Guyer, were married on 23 Dec 1728 in Perquimans County, North Carolina.[1]
Birth
Mary (Fletcher) Ratliff was born in North Carolina.
Mary was born c. 1732 to Ralph Fletcher III and Mary Guyer.
Note
There are conflicting records available for Mary's DOB. The Millennium File of her son Cornelius on Ancestry.com lists her DOB as 1726, which conflicts with her parents' DOM of 1728. However, both she and her husband are explicitly named in her father's will, so there is no concern of misattribution or conflation. There is an entry for Mary Fletcher, daughter of Ralph Fletcher and Mary Guyer, in the Family Data Collection on Ancestry.com that lists her DOB as 1742, which conflicts with her documented DOM to Joseph Ratliff and the births of their documented children. As this database lists no sources, it is likely to be unreliable. Setting DOB estimate to c.1732 to align with parents DOM, siblings DOBs, her own DOM, and her children's DOBs. S. Grimaldi 04 May 2021.
Siblings
She was one of several documented children born to Ralph and Mary. Due to the irregular spacing of known birth dates, it is likely children are missing or died in childbirth.
Ralph Fletcher IV, born on 20 Feb 1729 in Perquimans County, North Carolina.[2]
Mary Fletcher, born c.1732 in Perquimans County, North Carolina.
Thomas Ratliff, born c. 1757 in Perquimans County, North Carolina.[8]
Richard Ratliff, born 04 Nov 1759 in North Carolina.[11][8]
1760s
Mary, now as a widow following the death of Joseph, is recorded in the Pasquotank Monthly Meeting minutes as lodging a complaint towards one Jesse Henley on behalf of her children on 09 Oct 1761.[12]
