Biography

Walter was born on 19 January 1872 at Blackheath, Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, the son of Thomas Fletcher and Eliza Gadd.

In the 1881 census Walter was living with his parents at Powke Lane, Blackheath. He was aged 9 years. [RG11/2859 47 Pg 34 & 48 Pg 35]

In 1891 the family was still at Powke Lane. Walter, aged 19, was a grocer's assistant. [RG12/2279 156 Pg 34]

In the 1901 census Walter was boarding with Frederick Ashby and family at 3 Canal St, Chester, Cheshire. Aged 29, he was then a salesman. [RG13/3373 51 Pg 2]

Walter Fletcher married Edith Ellen Payne in 1901 at St. Paul’s Church, Blackheath.

This couple had three daughters named Nellie May born 1902, Vera born 1904 and Gwendoline Joyce born 1912, all born in Chester, Cheshire.

In the 1911 census Walter and Edith Helen [sic] were living at 1 Cambrian Villa, Garden Lane, Chester. Walter, aged 40, was a grocer’s manager. Edith was aged 30 and daughters May, as named, and Vera aged 8 and 6 respectively.

The 1939 Register, taken on 29 September 1939, has been described as a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. The Register recorded each person's address, date of birth and occupation.
At that time Walter and Edith were residing at 9 Gerrards Avenue, Chester. Walter, born 19 January 1872, was aged 67. He was a retired grocer’s manager. Edith, born 28 August 1879, was aged 60. Daughter Vera, born 31 May 1904, was aged 35. She was an elementary school teacher. Her surname was later amended to Woods, her married surname. Joyce, born 27 June 1912, was aged 27. She, too, was an elementary school teacher.

Walter Fletcher died on 16 June 1947 aged 74 years.

Edith Ellen Fletcher died on 7 December 1967 aged 88 years.
