The birth registrations in the St Ives district of Huntingdonshire in England of her 2 sons John, son George and daughter Jane all have her maiden name as Hills (see their profiles). There is no matching civil marriage registration for a Sarah Hills and William Gilbert and none of the free or subscription sites on-line have a Church marriage for them. Many on-line trees assume she was Sarah Fletcher based on their being an 1842 civil marriage registration for William Gilbert in the St Ives district in 1842 with one of the 3 possible wives, which might match a registration in the same quarter and location, being a Sarah Fletcher. Their is no church marriage record to match. Some trees have Sarah Gilbert remarrying in Australia and some appear to confuse Gilbert and Fletcher families (and others) in placing her children’s births marriages and deaths. William and Sarah may not have actually married; they were young when their first child was born. Or a Church record has not yet been transcribed and placed on-line. The civil marriage record for the Sarah Fletcher would reveal who she actually married. It seems highly unlikely Sarah Hills married first a Fletcher and then William Gilbert given their ages and the fact that she seems to appear in the 1841 Census as Sarah Hills in the same Warboys village as William Gilbert.
Examination of the Autosomal DNA testing results of her definite descendants might help work out her true ancestry.
